WHY CANTERBURY HOME LOANS

Personal Mortgage Advice From A Christchurch Family Business

Canterbury Home Loans was built around a simple idea: home loan advice should feel clear, personal and practical. Instead of trying to work everything out directly with one bank, clients can talk through their situation, understand their options and get guidance before making major property decisions.

As a Christchurch-based family business, Canterbury Home Loans focuses on long-term relationships rather than one-off transactions. The goal is to help people feel more informed, more prepared and more confident throughout the lending process.

Whether you are buying your first home, moving house, refinancing or planning your next step, the advice is centred around your goals, your timeline and what lenders are likely to assess.

Practical mortgage advice, clear communication and personal support for Canterbury buyers from the first conversation through to settlement.

MEET DUANE

The Story Behind Canterbury Home Loans

More than 25 years of banking and home lending experience has shaped how I help clients today.

My career began in banking and home lending, helping customers navigate some of the biggest financial decisions they would ever make. Over the years I worked across lending, leadership and management roles with ASB, Westpac and Commonwealth Bank Australia, gaining first-hand experience of how lenders assess applications, manage risk and support borrowers through the home loan process.

Throughout that journey I saw many buyers struggle to understand their options. Lending policies can vary significantly between banks, approval requirements can change quickly and many borrowers simply want someone who can explain things clearly before they commit to a major financial decision.

That experience ultimately led to the creation of Canterbury Home Loans. The goal was to build a business focused on practical advice, clear communication and helping clients understand their lending options before moving forward.

Today I work with first-home buyers, home movers, refinancers and homeowners throughout Canterbury and wider New Zealand, helping clients compare lenders, navigate approval requirements and move through the mortgage process with greater confidence.

In August 2026, I contributed mortgage-adviser commentary to The Press’ My New Home article about a family’s move to a lifestyle property near Oamaru, which also linked readers to Canterbury Home Loans’ guide to buying a lifestyle block in New Zealand.

WHY USE A MORTGAGE ADVISER?

Why Many Home Buyers Choose To Work With A Mortgage Adviser

Buying a home involves more than simply finding a lender. Many buyers choose to work with a mortgage adviser because they want help understanding their options, navigating lender requirements and having someone available to guide them through the process when questions arise.

While every situation is different, having access to experience, support and a clear understanding of how lenders assess applications can make the home loan process feel significantly less overwhelming.

Going Direct To One Bank

  • One lender’s products and lending criteria
  • One view of your income, expenses and deposit
  • You may need to approach other lenders yourself
  • Limited guidance if your situation does not fit neatly

Working With Canterbury Home Loans

  • Compare options across multiple New Zealand banks and lenders
  • Understand what lenders may assess before applying
  • Get help preparing documents, conditions and next steps
  • Support from the first conversation through to settlement

Advice Built Around Clarity, Experience And Trust

The value of good mortgage advice is not just choosing where to apply. It is understanding your position, preparing properly and knowing what happens next. That guidance can be especially helpful for first-home buyers, buyers with changing circumstances, low-deposit borrowers and anyone comparing more than one lending pathway.
